This season's Art at Auction begins with a series of discussions on the state of the art market by Sothebj s experts and respected figures in the art world. It looks at how the art market is reacting to a rapidly changing world - the growth of Asian markets, the effect of changes in Eastern Europe, the implications of a single European market and the demand for Latin American art in the anniversary year of Columbus's historic voyage.
This is followed by a lavish visual gallery of the most important works of art to have come up for auction in 1991-92. The season witnessed the sale of a remarkable number of rare collections of the highest quality that created an atmosphere of excitement in the salerooms. These included the Keck Collection of French and Continental furniture, Karl Lagerfeld's Memphis furniture and the Lagonico Collection of Iznik pottery. One of the undoubted highlights of the season was the sale of the Jaime Ortiz-Patino Collection, comprising French furniture, European silver and Old Master paintings.
Outstanding individual pieces included a Louis XVI ormolu-mounted sycamore, bois satiné and mahogany commode, a Fabergé Imperial Easter egg known as the Love Trophy Egg and one of the most important portraits by Rembrandt to come from a British private collection.
In addition, Art at Auction looks into the work done by Sotheby's in the fields of attribution, authentication, restoration and conservation.
Informative and beautifully presented, this bo(jk offers an unrivalled insight into important world developments and art market issues, and provides a fascinating visual record of saleroom highlights for the year. As such it will be an invaluable reference work for collectors, dealers and art historians, and will be enjoyed by all those with an interest in art and the art world. Vissza
