This volume of selected and edited research reports, the first in an annual series, has been prepared by the staff of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty in Munich, Paris, New York and Washington, D.C., where the most comprehen-sive Western depositories of primary sources on the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe are located. These RFE/RL reports are well known and highly regarded by specialists; for the first time they are available to a wider audience in a more permanent form. These reports have been selected for analytical and interpretive qualities as well as topicaiity, and are arranged thematically to convey the dynamics of change in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, to identify new developments, and to pro-vide a basis for evaluating the future. An introduction places developments during the period within the broader context of evolution in the Soviet bloc.
