The history of Spain is remarkable for the excesses oí the Inquisition carried out with a harshness which were equalled only by the revolutionary fervour with which a proud and passionate people defied their oppressors. These extremes of behaviour left their mark on Spanish painting, determining its character and giving it a unique flavour. It is essentially realistic, demonstrating a stark, even cruel love of detail which is at the same time linked to a preference for religious themes. It is rightly said that transcendental ideas have nowhere acquired such earthy forms as in Spain.
