THE VIOLIN AND I (2nd printing)
"An infectiously high-spirited account of her career by the Hungarian violinist and teacher whose new methods and approach have caused a stir in the musical world."
Desmond Shawe-Tayior
Kato Havas, born in Hungary, was a child prodigy of the violin. Introduced to the instrument at the age of 5 she gave her first professional recital at 7. Her compatriot, Emil Telmanyi, was so impressed by her playing that he arranged for her to study at the Royal Academy in Budapest, where she received the traditional Hungarian virtuoso training. Later she toured most of the major capitals of Europe, made her debut at Carnegie Hall at the age of 17, and was acclaimed by the critics everywhere.
Whereas most child prodigies find a period of retirement essential if they are to achieve maturity of mind and musicianship, in the case of Kato Havas this happened quite naturally. She married at 18, and while bringing up her three daughters withdrew altogether from professional life. It was during this period of withdrawal, of standing back as it were, that she evolved her revolutionary method of teaching. In pondering the questions and limitations of contemporary violin playing she found she had tumbled upon the core of the problem. She began to teach a few people, mostly her friends, and the results were so startling and instantaneous that as soon as her daughters were at boarding school she began to give lessons seriously.
A series of articles about her method by Noel Hale F.R.A.I\/I. appeared in the "Strad", "I was priviliged" wrote Mr. Hale, "to witness the teaching of a method of violin playing entirely new to me, which I believe is capable of revolutionizing the technique of playing . writing as a personal witness I must say that I have been amazed at the result of this unusual approach."
Miss Havas was invited to lecture at Oxford; she gave talks and demonstrations on television. She has given lecture demonstrations throughout Great Britain and has also lectured in Canada. She has travelled extensively in the United States, giving lecture demonstrations at major universities on the release of tension and anxiety in violin playing. She runs her own Summer Violin School in Dorset and is founder and Director of The Purbeck Festival of Music.
She is based in London and players come to her from all over the world. Vissza
