Christian terra-cotta oil lamps were used daily in the Holy Land for about half a millennium - from the fourth to the ninth centuries. They are shaped by ordinary craftsmen and without any great artistic merit. And yet these lamps show how deeply the Christian faith had penetrated the humbler sections of the local population, and how spontaneously this faith was expressed in their daily lives.
This booklet is addressed to all the people interested in ancient clay lamps. In particular it is dedicated to the pilgrims and visitors from all over the world, who come to the Holy Land to quench the thirst of their faith at its
source.
