Included are some of the last photos taken inside Cannery Row before it closed, along with fascinating panoramas of ethnic and ' cultural groups which populate the land, shots of some of the
most dramatic scenery anywhere, and images caught in a breath of time that depict the changing climate which characterizes the Carmcl-Monterey-Salinas region. ; Today the canneries are gone and the face of Cannery Row
i; sports boutiques and a world-class aquarium. Yet the entire region
is now informally called Steinbeck Country because the feelings of j Steve Crouch and the influence of this book have had a lasring
¦j effect on those who love the area.
Now reissued, this classic, STEINBECK COUNTRY, has i come at last to join Steve's other book, FOG AND SUN, SEA
] AND STONE: THE MONTEREY COAST, which was also
published by Graphic Arts Center Publishing Company Com-i panion volumes, both portray the charm and beauty of this special
comer of the world in a way unriveled by any other book.

Steve Crouch had a long-standing love affair with the region now called Steinbeck Country. For over thirty years, this noted author-photographer explored the canyons, mountains, shoreline, and valleys of his home area, as well as the deserts of the American Southwest and Mexico, the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. He had planned a major trip to China, but he passed away in May 1983.
As do many other professional photographers, Steve worked long hours in various commercial enterprises — first doing tasks like weddings and local advertisements, then delving into practically everything from portraits and fashion photography, to landscapes and aerials. This broad background made him a great teacher, and workshops became an important element in his life. He loved to instruct, becoming a friend and mentor to many of his students.
But Steve is perhaps best known for his contributions in the area of fine art photography. His work remains with us in many ways — in permanent collections and museums around the world, in the hearts of those who love and collect his images, and in the photographs taken today by those he taught and encouraged.
