IN PRAISE OF PRIMATES is a visual tribute to our closest genetic relatives. Renowned wildlife photographer Steve Bloom has created a spectacular portfolio of images which goes beneath the skin and shows a rare insight into the world of these animals.
The majority of the pictures were taken in the wild, and those taken in captivity were only in rescue centres or places which have a good track record for the care of endangered species.
His travels took him to a research centre in the jungle of Kalimantan province, Borneo, where he photographed orangutans, proboscis monkeys and gibbons. His travels took him to a research centre in the jungle of Kalimantan province, Borneo, where he photographed orangutans, proboscis monkeys and gibbons. He made several expeditions into the Virunga Mountains on the borders of Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, where he photographed the highly endangered mountain gorillas. He photographed wild chimpanzees in Chambura Gorge, to the north of the Virungas in Uganda. Many of the roads on which he travelled were accessible only by four wheel drive vehicles, and the daily treks into the forested mountains were physically taxing in the extreme. He travelled to the snow-capped peaks of the Japanese Alps to photograph snow monkeys - the only primates, apart from humans, who are known to bathe in hot springs.
Steve Bloom's approach is aesthetic rather than scientific. His pictures are intended to move us deeply, and to foster a realisation of how close we are to the many other creatures with whom we share the world.
World renowned primatologist Dr Jane Goodall has written the foreword to this book.
