I welcome this long overdue biography of Emery Roth and his extraordinary contribution to architecture in New York. The character of his residential towers- and imaginative and eclectic use of traditional architectural language-offers lively variety and richness to the city as well as creating humane and quite wonderful places to live. MICHAEL GRAVES The büildings of Emery Roth, particularly those of the 1920s, deserve a good look because of the very successful architecture he produced with his "no nonsense approach to design-unencumbered by architectural theories." These are very urbane, handsome structures that often played a background role in the city fabric but they became celebratory when necessary, as in his twin-peaked büildings on Central Park West. Mr. Ruttenbaum's book is timely and welcome.
