Prehistoric archaeology has seen notable advances in recent years, particularly at Stonehenge, where our understanding has been much enlarged by the latest excavations.
This book presents the results of that research, reinterprets the findings of earlier excavators, and gives a comprehensive account of the monument andits significance within the wider framework of British prehistory.

third discusses the techniques used for transporting, tooling and erecting the stones; the fourth surveys the prehistoric communities which contributed to the buildings of Stonehenge; and the fifth, necessarily more speculative, interprets the monument in terms of changing religious beliefs and of social and political organization. An additional chapter summarizes the history of research and speculation on Stonehenge and its relation to the development of antiquarian
thought in Britain. In this edition a second appendix has been added, giving the revised radiocarbon chronology, and the bibliography has been updated.
