"At times, when I am alone, on my way back from town, I look at the world within my soul.
I see what I cannot say: the shack, the black bread, sick children in dirty elothes, with sallow faces, I see tears and bleak misery. And I see the palace, the luxurious automobiles, the gold and the diamonds, the parlours, and all the splendour of the rich; I can read in their souls.
And I feei the drive to write down all this. To catch all this world, all this air, all the grass blades in the graveyard to put them into a book that should smell of spring, of flowers, of smoke, of dream and happiness."
Pavel Dan jötted down these lines at nineteen; what lay ahead for him that moment to answer the call was just a couple of months more than ten years, in fact much less by common standards, since the last few years of his life elapsed in the gloom of the fatal disease that was to murder him before the age of thirty."
