This book is an essay in the interpretation of the main lines of European prehistory from the first agricultural communities in the sixth or seventh millenium bc to the incorporation of much of barbarian Etirope within the Roman Empire. Geographically, it ranges over the whole European field, from the Atlantic to the Urals and Caucasus. Professor Piggott succeeds in marshalling the vast and scattered archaeological evidence, and producing from it a considered synthesis.
