This book was the first to review the archaeology of prehistoric India in relation to that of Western Asia as a whole. Although the great cities of Harappa and Mohenjo-daro are well known, the peasant communities of the Indián Bronzé Age in Sind and Baluchistan have received little attention since the time of their first discovery thirty years ago. Work in Iraq and Persia has thrown much light on Indián problems, and the contacts and relationships between these regions are described. The story of Indián origins is discussed from the remotely ancient Palaeolithic period onwards, though the body of the book deals with the Bronzé Age of western and northern India between about 3000 and 1500 b.c. which has produced most of the available archaeological material. The book has been limited to the period before 1000 b.c., which allows for an examination of the archaeological and linguistic evidence for the Indo-European conquest of India under the Aryans.
