For somé tirno past, a study group in the Fnstiti i te for Li terary S tud ies of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, with the collaboration of foreign scholars, has been examining different aspects of the transition from Classic to Román tie, rnainly in Western Europe. The eleven studies appearing in this volume, fi ve in English and six in French, treat a wide rangé of subjects. Sorne discuss problems of generál literary and aesthetic theory, sorne are eoncerned with structure and style, others with the ernergence of the powerful literary trends to become predominant in the following century, while still others are comparative studies discussing the influenee of great writers and schools of thoughts across the national frontiers. Using a variety of methods, these studies highlight somé of the most important problems of 18th-century literature, and rnay alsó ser ve as a kind of introduction to a eornprehensive treatment of the transforrnation of the European literary scene at the...
