The narrator begíns to read the Diary of Anna Grigor yevna, wife of the tragic and enigmatic Rus-sian writer, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, while travelling on a train between Moscow and Leningrád - the former capital of the Russian Empire, St Petersburg - a journey undertaken by Dostoyevsky himself more than a century earlier. Modulating between past and present, the narrator, as he leafs through the Diary, painstakingly reconstructs the life of the Dostoyevskys, relating it intimately to his own experience and to that of contemporary man in extremis, both Soviet and universal. Vissza
