MARRIAGE SUSAN FERRIER
Susan Ferrier's comedies of Scottish life and character have been unjustly neglected. Marriage is the first of her immensely enjoyable satirical novels and was published anonymously in 1818.
'I do not recollect', she wrote to a friend, 'ever to have seen the sudden transition of a high-bred English beauty, who thinks she can sacrifice all for love, to an uncomfortable solitary Highland dwelling among tall red-haired sisters and grim-faced aunts. Don't you think this would make a good opening of the piece?' The resulting book was received with delight; to Mrs Piozzi it was 'the newest and merriest; 'tis a very comical thing'.
This edition of a book for too long unavailable has a biographical introduction by His Honour Judge Irvine.
