Busiest of all the ways of Norway
was the sea, which encloses the
traces of man. Almost all of
Norway's towns grew up along
the coast, looking out to sea.
To meet them eye to eye takes
arriving by boat. But you can also
approach them - more slowly
and cautiously - from the rear,
on roads that hug the landscape.
For inland too, there was always
traffic. The first wanderers were
nomads, ranging widely from the

And even when people settled to

Over the centuries patterns
changed, and so did the ways.
Nature is slow to cover the signs.

Susan Tyrrell has travelled some
of the ways of Norway. She has
sauntered through city streets
and picked wildflowers along the
byways. She has seen, questioned
and compared, and delved into
history for an explanation. With
her help, few readers will feel
themselves strangers in the
towns she introduces them to, or
will fail to take in the promise of
mystery and surprise in each little
grass-covered road which winds
away from today's busy
thoroughfares. Vissza
