In the Netherlands, the end of the Middle Ages, man's turning from spiritual fervour to a delight in his physical world was reflected in a new artistic attitűdé: the aim was to please, rather than to inspire. The northward spread of the ideals of the Italian Renaissance and the flowering of the bourgeois culture of the towns coincided with the introduction of oil-painting. The fruits of this coincidence were the richly glowing panel paintings of the Netherlandish masters of the fifteenth century, which were as often intended to adorn the houses and grace the priváté devotions of patrons as the altars of churches. The Hungárián collections in Budapest and Esztergom are rich in Netherlandish art. The finest of the panels are reproduced here in full colour, with a selection of their most important details and with notes by Susan Urbach.
