VENTS of the past few years have thrown into prominence the land of Syria and its neighbours Lebanon and Palestine. For a full understanding of the complex position of Syria with regard to other Arab states and with regard to the world situation as a whole, a knowledge of the background history of the country and its people is vital. Professor Hitti traces Syria's history from the ancient Semitic times, through the period of Greek and Roman rule, from the conquest of Alexander the Great to the rise of Islam, on to the story of Syria under the Ottoman Turks, and, finally, through its days as a French mandate to its present full independence and recent merger with Egypt into the United Arab Republic.
This authoritative book is an abridgement of Professor Hitti's History of Syria, which is now in its second edition. It is intended not so much for the scholar as for the general reader who needs the background knowledge for understanding the issues imder debate today.
