A COURSE IN SPOKEN ENGLISH INTONATION is designed to help students of English at university level to master the intonation patterns of everyday spoken English. The introduction gives a description, with examples, of the basic sound patterns, the tones in generál and in detail, the meaning of the tones and of tonic prominence. The main part of the book consists of four chapters which deal respectively with: 1. Sound patterns 2. Actual tones in their most usual form 3. Further distinctions and variations in meaning 4. Use of the tones, and other intonation features in connected speech of various kinds. Each chapter has ten study units, which provide practice in the recognition and reproduction of the various features of intonation. Throughout the book, the text is ably supported with accurate line drawings. A special feature of this volume is that it has all been recorded on tape.
