The history of Spain is remarkable for the excesses oí the Inquisition carried out with a harshness which were equalled only by the revolutionary fervour with which a proud and passionate people defied their oppressors. These extremes of behaviour left their mark on Spanish painting, determining its character and giving it a unique flavour.
