THE TRANSATLANTIC SLAVE TRADE: LANDMARKS, LEGACIES, EXPECTATIONS It is therefore necessary to disseminate the outcome of the Conference through publications, seminars, teaching programmes in schools, colleges, universities, the média and similar fora. This strategy has the potential of achieving positive results in three ways. First, it will strengthen our resolve to improve the humán rights of people of all colours, races, status etc. Secondly, it will help to reconcile the people of African descent, who are scattered all over the world and allow them to return and assist to develop their ancestral homeland. Thirdly the knowledge to be gained would help to re-direct world history and development and in the process accelerate global unity. His Excellency Alhaji Aliu Mahama Vice-President of the Republic Of Ghana Forced labour and the institution of slavery are abominable, particularly in their commercial form. We cannot re-write history, and even if we could, we would not know where to begin and how to go about it! In spite of the deep tragedy of the transatlantic slave trade, we should not forget the global encounters and experiences it entailed. Thus, the present book is a remarkable attempt at viewing the slave trade in full scientific and related contexts. It contains gems of historical interpretation that enable us to have a better insight into slave trade with all its horrors. This is indeed a fine book that has appeared at the right time. I recommend it wholeheartedly to all Africanist historians. Klavs Randsborg Professor at University of Copenhagen Vissza
