THE WORLD OF ART The Pre-Raphaelites Timothy Hilton 1 57 plates 21 in color In the summer of 1848, seven men förmed the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in reaction to the academic style then prevalent in England, traceable from the art of Raphael. Without proclaiming a common theoretical doctrine, the individual members of the group shared the practice of painting directly from nature, certain technical devices, and a stylistic approach characterized by its literary flavor, morál seriousness, elaborate symbolism, and fresh iconography. Led by John Everett Millais, Holman Hunt, and Dante Gábriel Rossetti, the Brotherhood remained together less than a decade, yet its brief existence marked an important step in the development of modern painting. This is the first critical history specifically of Pre-Raphaelite painting to appear in seventy years, piacing the movement in its historical setting and relating the individual painters and their art to the larger concepts of nineteenth-century society. Virtually every major Pre- Raphaelite painting is discussed and illustrated, as well as works by the movement's numerous minor talents. Hilton traces the emergence of Pre-Raphaelitism from the naturalism of John Ruskin, the archaism and ethnology of the Germán Nazarenes, and early Victorian romantic taste, through the abandonments of its early historicism to become, in the hands of Hunt, Ford Madox Brown, and others, a reálist movement. The Pre-Raphaelites' later tendencies toward escapism and utopianism laid the foundations (in the work of Morris, Rossetti, and Burne-Jones) of European Symbolism and Art Nouveau. "As art history this book is first class, and unlike much art history it scores very high for readability" - Illustrated London News "This is a zestfully written and controversial account of a group of painters who have aroused more passionate adherence and denigration than almost any other group in the history of the British School. . extremely stimulating" - Marina Vaizey, Arts Review Timothy Hilton, who has taught at the Courtauld Institute of Art, is the author of Picasso (alsó in the World of Art series), and is writing a biography of Ruskin. On the cover Ford Madox Brown. The Lasl of England. 1855 Vissza
