Roald Dahl's parents were Norwegian, but he was born in Wales in 1916. After taking part in an expedition to explore the interior of Newfoundland, he joined the Shell Oil Company and was sent by them to Dar-es-Salaam in 1938. On the outbreak of the Second World War he enlisted in the RAP; and flew Hurricanes in Libya, Greece and Syria. After being severely wounded, Roald Dahl was sent to Washington in 1942 as an Assistant Air Attaché, and it was there that he started to write short stories. His first twelve, based on wartime experiences, were originally published in leading American magazines, and later in a book, Over to You. Since then his stories, which have received extraordinary acclaim, have been translated into many languages and have been best-sellers all over the world.
Roald Dahl has also written fifteen books for children, including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, The Wonderful World of Henry Sugar, Danny the Champion of the World, TheBFG, The Witches, Fantastic Mr Fox, George's Marvellous Medicine, and a col lection of poetry, Roald Dahl's Revolting Rhymes. All of them have remained bestsellers in the UK, America and many other countries.
