Never have two sueh important world figures eollaborated on a biography: T. G. Masaryk (1850-1937), the original Philosopher-President who founded Czechoslovakia in 1918, and Karei Capek (1890-1938), the leading Czeeh novelist, story writer, and play-wright. Capek interviewed Masaryk over a number of years and then from memory produeed a single narrative that tells Masaryk's ineredible story in a voiee as ordinary and yet magieal as the best of Capek's fictional charaeters.
It is the story of how a poor half-Czech, half-Slovak country boy got himself an edueation, married a girl from Brooklyn, beeame a professor, and grew inereasingly eontroversial by defending a young Jew aceused of ritual murder and by unmask-ing Czeeh historica! sagas as forgeries.
