A CONCISE HISTORY OF RUSSIAN ART tamara talbot rice The two faces of Russian art, one looking towards Europe, the other towards Asia, are a vivid symbol of Russia herself. Beginning in ioth century Kiev with complete dependance on Byzantine models, she evolved in the succeeding centuries a vigorous and highly individual style in both architecture and painting, of which the most lasting product was perhaps the icon. Peter the Great's enforced Westernization brought foreigners to Russia who decisively influenced the course of her art throughout the i8th and i9th centuries but around 1900 they rediscovered their own native traditions, leading to a Renaissance which put Russia in the forefront of artistic progress, of which Diaghilev's Bal/ets Russes was the first demonstration to the outside world.
