ARITHMETIC
This book is written for those who wish to gain a practical working knowledge of arithmetic. It differs from the majority of arithmetic textbooks in that it explains in unusual detail the actual processes involved in the various kinds of arithmetical calculation. Whereas most books contain the minimum amount of expository matter and concentrate on the orderly assembly of graded examples for working, this book makes exposition a primary aim, while also providing the numerous examples which the student must have if he is to confirm what he has learnt.
The subject is developed comprehensively from its beginnings, the elementary processes being dealt with in the first nine chapters. Chapter 10, on arithmetical graphs, includes a short account of statistical applications. There then follows three chapters of a practical nature which should be of use as an elementary basis for engineering and allied courses. Chapters 14-16 are devoted to Civil Arithmetic, and it is hoped that these will prove of help to almost all those who have any source of income: some of the simpler aspects of Income Tax and insurance are explained in a straightforward manner, together with the details of Stock Exchange procedure. The last chapter serves as an introduction to the arithmetical background of certain kinds of electronic computing machine, which are now becoming so important. Vissza
