The British character has been moulded over many centuries by a feeling of security, safeguarded by nature, an island fortress surrounded by the sea. Perhaps it is only since we have become officially Europeans that we have come to realise that the oft repeated statement "our heritage is at stake" has had any real meaning. We now look again at this heritage, at the cathedrals, Canterbury, York, St. David's, and at many other fine buildings up and down the country and realise how precious they are to us. Luckily we have at last woken up to the problem and preserving our environment has become a major issue.
