TIHAMÉR TÓTH
Deep in man's being is a powerful drive for freedom. That much sought for state, however, embraces such a broad rangé of concepts that it holds drfferent, often con-flicting meanings, for different men. More-over, before the quest for freedom can be-come more than a vain will-o'-the-wisp pursuit, freedom's many facets must be un-derstood and evaluated in terms of today's world. Toward this end Tihamér Tóth has, in this thoughtful book, recorded his reflec-tions on the modern dynamics of man's eternal struggle to be free.
Often the author presents his material in the form of a dialogue with his conscience. This gives rise to stimulating questions, both explicit and implied.
Can one man's freedom, for instance, be another man's chains? Is personal freedom tantamount to self-identity and happiness—or chaos and anarchy? Does freedom have built-in re-sponsibilities? If so, is man ready for them? Should man desire freedom when freedom from desire is the greatest humán happiness? Do the anti-establishment slogans of hippiedom point toward freedom—or a new and arrogant establishment? What is the role of money? Of God?
It is to these and scores of related questions that Mr. Tóth, drawing on his ex-periences, meditations and an extended European sojourn, including a stay on Mount Athos in Greece, directs his attention. No rigid set of answers, the author is well aware, can be wedged into every in-dividuars frame of reference. Each must arrive at his own concept of freedom and its relevance to his role in the universe. Mr. Tóth demonstrates how this may be accom-plished. At the book's conclusion he has provided a provocative test in which read-ers may determine their involvement with freedom.
About the Author
Tihamér Tóth was born in Hungary in 1940. After living through the tragic events of the 1956 Hungárián uprising, he was forced to leave Hungary and emigrate to Canada, arriving in 1957. In 1967 he went on an extended European trip, visiting twelve eountries. It was the profound ex-perience of his pilgrimage to Mount Athos, he says, and the rugged charm of living in the caves of Matala that greatly helped him "to discover the truths enshrined in the heart of every humán being." Mr. Tóth, now a resident of Toronto, holds a B.A. from the Université of Montréal and a M.Ph. and L.Ph. from the University of Ottawa. Vissza
