The Aegean Civilizations is a comprehensive account of the 'lost' cultures of Crete and Mycenae which antedated the Classical period by a thousand years and more. Ranging over the prehistory of the area from Neolithic times to the collapse of the Mycenaean Empire c. 1200 BC, Dr. Warren begins his survey with a dramatic account of the early pioneers of Aegean archaeology. Among them were Schliemann, who searched for and found the Troy of Helen and Paris, and Sir Arthur Evans, who discovered the magnificent civilization of Bronze Age Crete and the great palace of Knossos.
Dr. Warren then describes the civilizations they and their successors discovered: the periods of the first farmers and metalworkers, the rise of Minoan Crete and the flowering of the mighty Mycenaean Empire whose impact was felt throughout the Mediterranean and whose trading contacts were as far-flung as Egypt and Syria.
