CHESTER G. STARR
Roman civilization dominated the ancient world for more than a thousand years. In a soundly conceived, fresh approach, based on modern historical scholarship, Professor Starr relates in The Ancient Romans a skillful chronicle of the Roman people, showing their continuous evolution over the centuries and stressing the significance of their long development in Western history. Vivid and engrossing in presentation, the study challenges the reader to think about the meaning of the Roman historical experience in the results of the Roman peace as well as in the "Decline and Fall."
The Ancient Romans is a companion to Professor Starr's The Ancient Creeks. Its arrangement is in four parts, each focused around a major historical figure— Hannibal, Julius Caesar, Hadrian, and Saint Augustine—and his epoch. An authentic picture of the Romans emerges through discussions of the great themes of Roman history—the development of politics... Tovább

The Ancient Romans is a companion to Professor Starr's The Ancient Creeks. Its arrangement is in four parts, each focused around a major historical figure— Hannibal, Julius Caesar, Hadrian, and Saint Augustine—and his epoch. An authentic picture of the Romans emerges through discussions of the great themes of Roman history—the development of politics and law and the building of an empire. The Greek and Etruscan heritage of the Romans, Roman art, architecture, and engineering, and the details of Roman life are among the topics treated In special essays within each section. The study is enriched by the visual impact of abundant illustrations—color plates, photographs, maps, and charts—ail carefully integrated within the text. Readings and quotations from original sources, a brief bibliography, and a pronouncing glossary are additional features.
"[Starr] has achieved lucidity without excessive oversimplification. The problems confronting an ancient historian and the tentatlveness of conclusions are emphasized—a feature uncommon in introductory books this volume has few peers."—American Historical Review
