Ever since Antoine Galland first translated The Arabian Nights, the tales have enthralled the western imagination. Readers for more than three centuries have delighted in a world wherein magic is woven into the fabric of everyday life—a world that is a touching, exhilarating mixture of high flamboyance, tender pathos, startling beauty, and earthy humor. The stories have entered our common mythology, and have influenced many writers, including Jorge Luis Borges and John Barth.
Long before the tales were written down, they circulated orally throughout the Arabian world, as they still do today. They have also, since the fourteenth century, circulated in a variety of manuscripts. Husain Haddawy has worked from the first responsible reconstruction, by Muhsin Mahdi, of a fourteenth-century Syrian manuscript.
