By Patrick Moore, O.B.E., with a Foreword by Professor Sir Bernard Lovell, O.B.E., F.R.S., and an Epilogue by Dr Thomas 0. Paine, Administrator NASA Over 1300 maps, diagrams, charts and photographs in full color, two color, and black and white
For thousands of years men have been mapping the Earth and the universe. Ptolemy of Alexandria drew 8 chart of the Mediterranean world, and looked out among the stars. Today voyages of discovery, both by travelers across the Earth and by astronomers with their telescopes, have made us realize for the first time the immensity of the universe in which we all live and the varied nature of our own world. Only now has it been possible to produce an Atlas which incorporates the vast new sum of knowledge of the space age. In size, scope and ambition the Rand M9Nally i4r/a5 of the Universe is truly without precedent in the history of mapping.
There is no part of the world, from the heights of Everest to the ocean depths, which remains unexplored today. The Earth has been surveyed from space, and has been seen in its true guise of a planet among planets. Astronauts have been to the Moon, and space vehicles have flown past the challenging Red Planet, Mars. Far away in the universe, radio signals have come to us, telling us that strange, powerful systems exist in those remote regions where even our optical telescopes cannot penetrate.
All this thrilling new knowledge has been brought together in this new Rand MCNally of the Universe. It is an Atlas of a kind which has not been compiled before, because it could not have been attempted before. The events which have made it possible have occurred only during the last few exciting months of the new era. Beginning with the Earth, the Atlas includes diagrams, pictures and -maps of all kinds relating breathtaking views of the world obtained from space vehicles to conventional Earth-mapping techniques, the structure of Earth, and the important new area of Earth resources studies. Much of this material is new; it has been made generously available by special arrangement with the U.S. Geological Survey and NASA, who have given their full support and collaboration with the book. Moving out from the Earth, The Atlas of the Universe includes a complete Atlas of the Moon; the Orbiter photographs, together with those of the astronauts who have trod the lunar surface, build up a picture of a world which is as fascinating as it is stark. Then come maps of our planetary neighbors: Mars, where men may land within the next decade or two; enigmatical Venus, hidden by its mantle of obscuring cloud, and charted ably by radar techniques: even the moons of Jupiter, first seen by Galileo more than 350 years ago. Leaving the Solar System, the reader is guided out to the stars; The Atlas of the Universe includes detailed maps and charts of the suns and galaxies of space, clear without being crowded, detailed without being exhaustive. Finally we are charted to the outermost limits of the universe itself. The Rand MCNally Atlas of the Universe is illustrated by a host of magnificent color photographs, together with maps on many projections and a vast number of explanatory line drawings and diagrams in color. It will become the standard guide to the thrilling story of our expanding knowledge of the expanding universe for at least the next three decades of this century. No one, young or old, will be able to follow the unfolding story of the exploration of space without it. Vissza
