'^HIS completely revised edition of " The Autocar Handbook," with its illustrations, follows the same lines as its predecessors, being written with the intention of explaining the mechanism of the car to motorists who do not possess abundant technical knowledge.
Although there is no question of explaining or analysing the design of a car or any of its many components, the design and the components are nevertheless described in detail and their functions explained ; but always from the point of view that the explanation will be followed by a car owner or driver who is not technical, and without going into details as would be necessary if the explanation were intended for an engineer.
It has been comparatively easy to deal with the function of all the chassis components on these lines, but the modern car is a very involved and complicated piece of mechanism ; so it has been essential to deal more thoroughly with the more complicated transmission which has now... Tovább

Since there are so many cars still running with components which have been discarded in favour of improved . designs on the more modern machines, the older-type mechanism has been dealt with also in detail; and, further, those auxiliary mechanisms with which every car is fitted have been included in the general descriptions because they are more likely to need care and maintenance than such things as the engine, clutch, gear box and rear axle.
The electrical section has been simplified in this edition, since the theory underlying the construction of the electrical machines on a car is not necessary knowledge. On the other hand, a general and accurate idea of the wiring and its purpose, the means of connecting the various accessories, is extremely useful knowledge. Vissza
