World War II was the bloodiest war in the history of mankind. More than 60 countries were involved in it and over 50 million people lost their lives.
From June 22, 1941 till Nazi Germany's surrender on May 9, 1945, the Soviet-German Front was the main one of the war. On that front the Wehrmacht lost six hundred and seven divisions, while 176 were defeated by the USSR's allies, the USA and Great Britain. The battles against the Soviet Army claimed 73 per cent of Germany's officers and men—10 million out of its total loss of 13.6 million in the war. The Wehrmacht's troop casualties on the Soviet-German front was four times greater than those sustained on the West European and Mediterranean fronts put together. It was on the Soviet-German Front that the bulk of Nazi nnateriel was destroyed—about 75 per cent of its tanks, aircraft and guns.
