THE BLUE RIDER

The name 'Blue Rider' symbolizes for us the renewal of German art which took place in Munich between 1911 and 1914. The name was invented by Vasily Kandinsky and Franz Marc for a group of painters which also included Paul Klee, August Macke, Alexei von Jawlensky and Gabriele Miinter. Although their work is by no means uniform in style, these artists shared a revulsion against academic art and a common ideal - to show that the modern spirit could transcend not only the traditional boundaries between one art and another, but also geographical and cultural boundaries. They valued the expressive power of all types of 'primitive' art and sought to achieve artistic synthesis, being especially interested in the relation between musical and visual impressions.
