No corner of the world could be richer in natural beauty than the ever-varying tapestry of rivers and hills, woodlands and pastures, marshes and coasts, that forms the British Isles. The infinite variety of Britain's scenery has been attributed to the influence of underlying rocks whieh vary in age from somé of the oldest formations in the world, in the barren wilderness of West Sutherland, to the new land masses still in the process of formation, onthe shifting south-eastern coastline of Dungeness.
