His book is intended to dispel this concept by returning to an earlier age and il-lustrating through the lives of two eighteenth-century contemporaries, Joseph Priestley of England and Antoine Lavoisier of France, the fathers of modem chemistry, how scientific knowledge is gained and how it can become a constructive weapon in man's never-ending search for en-lightenment.
