The Cézanne Chase
A spellbinding novel of the unexpected, set against the high-risk, international art and auction world, this absorbing thriller will take you inside the world's great museutns, auction houses, and private homes, to an arena where the appreciation of fine art treasures and extraordinary talent is poisoned by greed, vandalism, deceit, and murder
When two priceless self-portraits by the great French painter Paul Cézanne are found defaced in the Hermitage in Russia and in London's National Gallery, the remaining two dozen skyrocket in value, and museum and private security forces scramble to protect them. But when a body turns up, New Scotland Yard calls upon its expert in art and antique crime, Detective Chief Inspector Jack Oxby, to track the killer As he searches for clues, pitting his patient, experienced hand against a ruthless adversary, amid an outraged international art community and a stunned public, the prices of Cézanne's works, especially the as yet undamaged self-portraits, surge into the tens of millions. Oxby knows that these senseless losses are not isolated instances and that more masterpieces—and lives—may be targeted for destruction. But is there enough time to save them?
Crisscrossing between St. Petersburg, New York City, London, Provence, Boston, and Paris, aboard yachts, inside auction houses, museums and mansions, in villages and cities, the story unfolds to reveal Oxby's intricate strategy to catch the man he code names "Vulcan" and involves such other characters as the New York social scion who will act as a "lightning rod" in the gambit; the beautiful interior designer whose hidden past and ties to the killer put her own life in jeopardy; the unscrupulous Japanese private art dealer who won't let price or provenance stop him from having what he wants; the highly trained Norwegian pharmacist who is also an innovative chemist, charmer, and uncompromising killer; and the corrupt lawyer who is unwittingly setting the stage for the inost expensive auction in the history of Western art—as well as the most deadly.
