This book gathers Maharshi's original works Self-Enquiry, Llpadesa Sarniu, Five Hywns to Arunachala, and the two sets of Forty Verses, together with miscellaneous works, the most significant being Atmn Vidya. Osborne's presentation of Ramana Maharshi's teachings shows readers the purest form of Advaita Vedanta (non-duality) through the supremely simple discipline of Self-Enquiry. This discipline, as taught by Ramana Maharshi, embraces the path of action as well as that of knowledge, for it is to be used in the events of daily life as well as in meditation. In this way, the circumstances of life, instead of being obstacles to sadhana, or the path to liberation, are made an instrument of sadhana, when approached with love and devotion, and without self-interest. These collected works, lovingly edited by Osborne, are from the translations that were made at Maharshi's ashram. Often Maharshi's writings were in response to a specific request from a devotee, and Osborne provides the circumstances as background for each piece. But the wisdom contained in his writing has an undeniably universal appeal. In this book, along with Ramana Maharshi and the Path of Self-Knoivledge and The Teachings of Ramana Maharshi—also published by Samuel Weiser—Osborne has preserved a wealth of insight for generations of spiritual seekers to come.
Sri Ramana Maharshi was born in 1879. In his 17th year he attained enlightenment through a remarkable experience, as if undergoing death of the physical body while remaining in fuU consciousness. Following this transformation, he left his home and was drawn irresistibly to the sacred hill of Arunachala, where his ashram was formed. He never left it. Cover photos show Ramana Maharshi as a youth, in middle age, and late in his life. Vissza
