When the President of the United States decides to fire the Director of the CIA and the Director of the CIA decides he does not wish to go, then there is Hkely to be trouble. When the President is deeply implicated in a conspiracy which involves bugging the homes of journalists and selected enemies, and the Director has wind of what is going on, then it is in the White House that the worst of the trouble is likely to be experienced. This is a novel of corruption, intrigue and savage power-struggle at the highest level of politics; a story that would seem incredible if it were not that the truth had already strained credulity to the limits. What makes The Company different from any other political novel, however, is the authority with which every detail is sketched in, every character delineated. John Ehrlichman was Assistant to the President and played a part of critical importance in the events that led up to Watergate. Only a born storyteller could have written a book of such pace and suspense; only a man who had sat at the very centre of power and manipulated the levers that control it could have achieved such assurance and chilling plausibility.
John Ehrlichman graduated from UCLA and Stanford. During the war he served as lead navigator in the Eighth Air Force and for nearly a year was stationed in Suffolk near Bungay, from ^hich station he flew twenty-two missions. He was White House Counsel, then became Assistant to the President for Domestic Affairs in late 1969. For many years he has lived and practised law in Seattle, Washington. The Company was written in old adobe house in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Vissza
