the complete
paintings of giorgione
The name of Giorgione has always been surrounded with an aura of mystery. The poetic quaUty of his style and his enigmatic subjects, combined with his early death and the paucity of information about the man himself, were responsible for creating a legend and for setting a fashion - alia giorgionesca -both in contemporary painting and in costume. The lasting demand for his art has led to forgeries, and to faulty attributions to him of works by lesser artists. Giorgione also had a formative influence on major artists such as Titian, Sebastiano del Piombo, and Palma Vecchio, and it is sometimes difficult to distinguish their youthful works from what may be Giorgione's own.
In this volume all the works which may plausibly be said to be by Giorgione are discussed in detail, together with those attributed to him; other lost works, attributed to the master in historical documents, are also listed.
Cecil Gould was educated at Westminster School. He is Deputy Keeper of the National Gallery, London. His works include An Introduction to Italian Renaissance Painting, 1957; The Sixteenth-Century Venetian Schools, 1959; The Sixteenth-Century Italian Schools (excluding the Venetian), 1962; The Leonardo Cartoon (with Sir Kenneth Clark), 1962; and Trophy of Conquest, 1965. He has written catalogues for several exhibitions and articles for various art magazines and encyclopaedias.
