The famous Renaissance artist-biographer, Vasari, writing 150 years after the death of Giotto, was moved to say of him: "Through the grace of Heaven, Giotto alone—though born at a time of incompetent masters— resurrected the dead body of art and raised it to such perfection that it could be called excellent. It was truly the greatest of miracles that so coarse and bungling an age could attain such skill____"
Vasari, like his contemporaries, saw little merit in the Byzantine style whose conventions Giotto transcended. However, contemporary critics are in agreement with Vasari when ihey too acknowledge the fact that Giotto gave a human, profoundly moving, and highly personal aspect to art. His great fresco cycles in Padua, Florence, and Assisi are a testament to a genius who endowed the divine with life and breath.

Virtually every work that has ever been attributed to Giotto is included in this magnificently illustrated volume. Particular attention is given to the frescoes in Assisi, and in the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua, as well as those in the Peruzzi and Bardi chapcls in Florence. The colorplates show every aspect of Giotto's work, and panels, altarpieces, and crucifixes are well represented. A special section devoted to Giotto's sculpture and architecture will interest all students of his art.
