The late Michael Ventris's decipherment of the inscribed clay tablets found at Mycenaean sites in Greece and Crete will rank as an intellectual feat with the greatest discoveries of archaeology. It opened up the documents of a civilization older and more elaborate than that of Homer, and revealed one of the earliest of written languages. 'Epoch-making' is a precise description.
In this book Mr Chadwick does four things. He says something about the background of the discovery and of Ventris himself; he reconstructs step by step the chain of formidable logic by which Ventris moved to the decipherment; he discusses the arguments so far brought against it by critics; and he indicates the kind of society the documents record and the usefulness of the information they give. .
