A river has been running through my head since I was a boy. I saw the Hampshire Avon, just once, when I was ten and immediately thought it the most beautiful river in the world.'
But it was not until twenty-four years later that Chris Yates finally returned to the Avon with fishing rod in hand. T^>e Deepening Pool
is the story of how the author gradually fished his way back to the dream river of his childhood, how his earlier obsession with the carp was cured by the discovery of barbel and how the river compelled him to move house and family nearer to its banks, 'because by then it was under my skin and in my blood.'

While the Avon is a central theme, the author takes us on fishing expeditions to a variety of
other exquisite locations: from slow pike-haunted rivers to sparkling trout streams and winding brooks, from mysterious tree-lined carp lakes to minnow-infested shallows and, ultimately, to the deepening pool where the monster barbel move ghost-like across the gravel beds.
Chris Yates writes with an insight and sensitivity rarely found in today's angling literature. And although he has an enviable talent for catching specimen fish (he holds the current record for a rod-caught carp of 5IV2 pounds), he is equally content fishing for gudgeon and minnows. It is his total enthusiasm for all fish - coarse and game, large and small - and his infectious, self-deprecating humour that makes The Deepening Pool such a delight.

Chris Yates was born in Epsom in 1948 and spent his formative years fishing, or dreaming about fishing, after witnessing an old man catch a carp from a village pond. His first book, Casting at the Sun (1986), received many accolades from critics (see below) who sensed the arrival of a new talent in angling writing. The Deepening Pool follows a similar autobiographical path but it also marks the author's move to a house on Cranborne Chase, not far from the Hampshire Avon. From here he has been able to fish for a wide range of species including salmon, trout, chub, roach, dace, grayling and, above all, the powerful barbel. When he is not fishing, or writing about it in the angling journals, Chris is a freelance photographer whose work has been used extensively on book and record j
covers. He is currently starring in a major | (
six-part TV series about angling, which is being made by award-winning cameraman Hugh Miles.
Reviewers' comments on the author's first book. Casting at the Sun:
'1 can say without fear or favour it is the best book 1 have read on this lovely sport of ours; one that stands next to Sherringham's An Angler 's Hours.'
Coarse Fishing magazine
'Compulsive reading and 1 found it hard to put down. "Vibu can re-read chapters time and again to be, for a while, on the bank with the author and lost to the world.'
Today
'One can draw a direct line from Walton through Sherringham, via 'BB' and the late Richard Walker and arrive at a pedigree that suggests the good breeding of this book.'
