Although Shaw insisted on calling it 'A Tragedy', The Doctor's Dilemma (1906) is really a brilliant farce — the greatest satire on the medical profession since Moliere's Malade imaginaire. Equally unsparing about the incompetence of Harley Street grandees and hopeless GPs, and one of the supreme examples of Shaw's constant comic inventiveness, the play none the less raises serious issues.
For if, as one of the doctors claims, 'all professions are conspiracies against the laity', who is to protect the patient?
What is the value of different human lives? Can private medicine ever be justified? Shaw makes no attempt to shirk such difficult questions; the answers he comes up with are as paradoxical, as thought-provoking and as completely up to date as one would expect.
