This Dictionary is published with the object of combining the function of an elementary encyclopaedia with a dictionary of words. The range of entries cover historical events, famous people, geographical features, and governments of the world, as well as a general vocabulary at least equal to the best of other dictionaries of this size. Illustrations are planned to amplify definitions, especially where the nature of the thing defined could be shown more clearly than in words as, for example, the rigging of a ship, the arrangement of bones in a skeleton, or the deaf-and-dumb alphabet. The Dictionary has been greeted by the Press as a far-ranging fact book as well as a properly equipped word book and, turning the pages âT random, one can find information on the Falkland Islands or on Monteverdi, as well as drawings to show a high-perch phaeton or a ruminant's stomach.
