The city is man's most vibrant creation: a living organism that pulses with our Inspirations and failures, our diverse personalities, our most powerful emotions. In the closing years of the twentieth century, for the first time in history the city is also becoming the overcrowded house of more than half the people on earth. To write T/ie Exploding City, Robert Schlffer and Jerry Cooke visited nine of the world's great cities, capturing in words and photographs the remarkable extremes that make them special. Each city Is unique, but ail share a common problem: the need to absorb an exploding population into a limited infrastructure of jobs and homes.
Focusing on this central dilemma, the authors have produced an unforgettable essay that goes to the heart of the modern city, as it stands on the threshold of the new urban world. The lavish parks and squalid dumps of Mexico City; Cairo's haunting City of the Dead, where millions live and work In vast cemeteries; the pavement dwellers of Bombay; Lagos, a microcosm of Africa's enormous promise and desperate conflict; the bustling streets and markets of Tokyo and Shanghai; and the sheer glittering vitality and variety of New York—these Images both celebrate and condemn the way we live today.
Most striking are Jerry Cooke's photographs of people: babies, children, teenagers, men and women of all ages
(continued from front flap) in every city, captured candidly and In startling portraits. These photographs document the millions of lives that are the core of any city. As Robert Schiffer says in his Introduction, "Indeed, if there is a common denominator in the world today—an experience that people all over share and that, in a sense, unites them— it is to be found in the unique interrelationship that exists between a city and its people caught up in a historic and dramatic transition that has still to run its course." The Exploding City measures us by that line of our common humanity.
Robert L. Schiffer is a writer and international affairs expert who has worked on a wide range of population and environmental questions in virtually all parts of the world.
