The Faber Book of Modern European
Poetry offers its British readers their first reliable guide to a wide and still largely unknown terrain. It shows the work of the thirty or so most significant European poets of recent decades - several of them Nobel Prize winners - in translations often by writers of equal eminence: Ted Hiighes, Czeslaw Milosz, Derek Mahon and others.
Its editor, A. Alvarez, is perhaps the most influential anthologist of our time. The New Poetry, which he edited in the 1960s, did more than any book to challenge prevailing insularities and change the nation's taste; and, as adviser to the Penguin Modern European Poets series, he earned the gratitude of readers for introducing them to a wealth of writing previously beyond their reach.
A brief introduction explains the purpose of this selection. The strong presence of work by Eastern European poets suggests the need, in poetry as in politics, to redefine radically our idea of the New Europe.
