Jory, Hummadun and Sandy were on their way home after the terrifying night spent on the fearsome island. When they landed on the mainland beach, however, three swans came beating in to land not far away: and, as Jory said, "Birds like that never come here". Jory was wise, and he knew that the swans were asking help of himself and his two companions and that they had to follow them to wherever they led across the sea. They led to a large island, where the trio found hundreds and hundreds of swans, and among them two that were notable for the dazzling whiteness of their feathers and for the circlets of gold they wore on their heads. So struck were they by the beauty of these two swans that it was only just in time that they saw the great tide come roaring in, carrying with it on the crest of a wave a little raft bearing a little old lady and a little old man. This was the first attempt of the Old Fylie and the Old Loonie to kill the trio, and others were to follow as Jory and Co. set out to release the two swans from the spell of the evil old couple.
