Roger Manvell is a graduate and Doctor of Philosophy of London University. His pre-war career included lecturing in literature, drama, and the film, production and acting in over fifty plays, and a share in organizing a number of film societies. During the War he worked for the Films Division of the Ministry of Information, and joined the staff of the British Film Institute in 1945. He was appointed Director of the British Film Academy, the organization representing the senior film-makers of Great Britain, on its foundation in 1947. He has lectured on Britishfilmsand film-makersinnearlytwentycountries since the War, including America and Canada. He has been a regular broadcaster for ten years, and a frequent member of the BBC 'Critics' team. He is a member of the Committee of Management of the Society of Authors, a member of the Critics* Circle, and he was made an Honorary Life Member of the American Screen Directors' Guild when he visited New York in 1952. In 1954 he was made an Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, He is the author of many books, including an earlier Pelican Film, A Seat at the Cinema, On the Air (a study of radio and television), and The Animated Film. He was editor of the Penguin Film Review 1946-49 and of The C/nemo, an annual published by Penguin Books in 1950, 1951, and 1952.
